Toastmasters Is An International Organization Which Has Several Million Members All Over The World. It Was Started In The USA By A Doctor, Ralph Medley, Who Was Mortally Shy Of Speaking And Gathered A Few Friends Together To Address This Issue.
From this mundane beginning, the organization has thrived and has helped thousands of its members to face the challenge of communication. Melbourne has over 50 clubs in several locations and they all meet one evening per fortnight. Each 3 hour meeting consists of chairmanship training, impromptu speeches, prepared speeches, evaluation of the speeches and evaluation of the meeting in general.
Through a series of graded speeches, one learns the techniques of public speaking, chairing meetings, speaking on one’s feet and the art of evaluation. The organization awards certificates at the completion of a set of speeches. The highest award is DTM (Distinguished Toastmaster). Toastmasters also conducts training for the young at schools. Called a ‘Youth Leadership Programme’, this training enables the participants to develop communication skills. It consists of eight one to two hour sessions that enable participants to develop communication and leadership skills through practical experience.

Participants learn to:

  • Evaluate speaking ability
  • Organize and deliver speeches on set themes
  • Give impromptu talks
  • Control voice, vocabulary and gestures
  • Give constructive feedback and more

Dr. Jayant Bapat (aka Bapat kaka)

When I came to Australia, of course I spoke Indian English. Very soon I found out that it was very different from the Australian lingo. It took me a while to understand what the Aussies were saying, and vice-versa. In Australia, as migrants, we must speak and understand their language.

Afterall, we are the ones who have migrated. To be able to speak good English, to understand the local vocabulary, to understand meeting procedures and to mix with the local populace in general, one needs to seek help. Such help is easily available from two groups. One that started in the UK is called ‘Rostrum’.

The other, which is much more popular, is called ‘Toastmasters International (TMI)’. The latter helped me so well that I became a champion of Toastmasters and was a member for 25 years. Toastmaster recognize your public speaking progress through awards, the highest one being ‘Distinguished Toastmaster (DTM)’. I am a DTM.

For the community at large, Toastmasters conduct free courses for young students (called Youth Leadership Course). I conducted such courses in public and private schools for 20 plus years.

I am happy to offer such a course to the members of the MMVIC, of course free of charge. The course teaches you public speaking techniques, meeting procedures and a lot more. All that we need is a minimum number of 6 starters.
Take advantage of this offer and approach the committee to join such a course.
